Vegeta-ballin

Uncategorized

Last year, I went through a five-month vegetarian phase, well pescatarian actually. It felt great, I wasn’t deprived at all. So when in NY, with an abundance of healthy juice places, veggie and vegan restaurants, I’m on a mission to go feasting around town for some greens.

pureSo this was at Pure Food and Wine. Don’t ask me how I manage to take three carnivores there who actually liked there meal and didn’t kill me (except at the end when Jimmy ordered the gelato and it was kind of horrid) My raw zucchini lasagna was delicious, it had basil pistachio pesto, sun-dried tomato marinara and macadamia pumpkin seed ricotta. And a lot of flavor. Next over, Jimmy’s sweet corn and cashew tamales with chili spiced portabella, salsa verde, avocado, cashew coconut sour cream and raw cacao mole–it was pretty awesome too. And there’s Kevin fondling the ice cream sundae, which was definitely a winner. The fruity gelatos on the other hand…just no. The watermelon one was good, but the others were scary. Oh last thing, the sangria was really watery, don’t get it. But the rest was delicious!!

And another vegan place, Beyond Sushi. It was seriously incredible. If I could eat this everyday, I could turn vegan in 5 minutes. The rolls were extremely creative and flavorful. I went with Ale for lunch and we had the Spicy Mang (right)- comes with black rice, avocado, mango, cucumber and spicy veggies on top. We also had the Sweet Tree that had sweet potato in it. Both were awesome.

beyondHandroll time-we had the Veg Head- asparagus, alfalfa sprouts, cilantro, spicy veggies and black rice. The other hand roll was the Enoki Doki, with enoki, shiitake, portabella, cashews, ginger, romaine and black rice. You gotta get both. And that rice paper wrap…unreal. It was the Nutty Buddy, with buckwheat noodles, cashews, carrots, cilantro, jalapeño peanut butter, avocado, sesame oil, tofu and romaine. Unreal. Go. The prices were surprisingly really low for vegan food, $6.50 for rolls, $3.50 for hand rolls, and $5 for a small rice paper wrap. They deliver too… Last thing, the fresh juices are awesome. I had a watermelon mint juice and it was very refreshing.
