At least it’s not an avocado toast…? Kale is one of those inevitable things you might hate to love or love to hate on, but I can’t pass up an epic kale salad when it stares me in the face (they almost always do). And this was round two at El Rey and it was just as good, if not better.
But the secret is out, and this little LES hole-in-the-wall has gotten its fair share of media love, and the crowd on this Saturday was basically out the door. No blame there.
So this is the “not a falafel” falafel, which was a flavorful deconstructed concoction on pita with a nice kick of garlic, cauliflower, avo, and everything in between. FYI, that kale salad is no basic biatch bowl of greens, with its homemade almond vinaigrette, shaved almonds and lemon zest adding in serious flavor.
Everything at this place looks amazing. The menu is pretty versatile, with everything from chia seed pudding to their “lost bread” egg frittata, which is some kind of a marriage between a frittata and bread pudding that lots of people were devouring.
Just know that seating is minimal, but the food definitely packs a punch. Prices are very reasonable too, with nothing on the menu more than $10. Do it. Oh, and there’s beer and wine.
