In an era where fast casual dining is taking over, Zak is striving for the opposite. “I wanted a slow casual place,” said Zak when I asked to tap into his secret sauce-y life. “I’m not trying to be the next Chipotle. We have 50 employees, we don’t make very much, but it’s perfect.” That was almost as cute as his honey butter toast.
This piece of toast was actually slightly mind-altering in my book of carbs. See: craisins, poached pears, granola, cinnamon, ugh. All of it. I was really sad when it ended.
The avocado isn’t worth it. I’ve been spoiled in the avocado toast department in my day. The beet toast with labneh and feta however…I could fak with that. You should too.
I don’t know if I’ll be back at Zak the Baker, but it’s worth a one and done visit if only for the honey butter toast. You should also peruse the baked goods section. I had a staring contest with the babka.
